The base metal is either brass alloy or sterling silver, hand polished before plating. Electroplating is applied in three stages: copper, nickel, then pure gold or rhodium. Brass alloy rings are inspected after the copper stage and re-polished if surface flaws are found before continuing to the next plating stage.  Sterling silver rings are made from 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper, marked .925.
